Practice

Practice

The firm is governed by a set of organic philosophies which allows for introspection, dialogue and expression. It dwells on the muiltilayered expressions of the indian context in its expression. In the past two decades of its practice, Kham Design has evolved as an entity exploring the various nuances of space making through architecture, interiors, art installations, education and other mediums.

The core values under which the practise dwells in is discussed here.

The practise is based in two locations, one in Bengaluru in the heritage area of Chamarajpet where it is housed in a building built in the early 19th Century. The other is in Hosapete , in North Karnataka which is also ideally located very near to the ruins of Hampi.

Evolution

Evolution

Over the years, Kham’s ideology has grown to include ecology and sustainable practices. And we believe that it is possible to make this meaningful difference through Design in all our projects.

The work of the early decades of the practice also established other key principles we prioritise today, one being the visualization of spaces which respond to the context of who, what and why and also where. Thereby being conscious of the material it consumes and the volume it occupies. The other is the creation of places of innate sustainability – environmental strategies that are embedded in rather than added to the design.

We found that our sensitivity to Bangalore’s diverse environments enabled us to appreciate those in other cities, Our purpose is simply expressed (albeit complex in thinking and resolution) – to make the built environment more experientially rich than it was before.

Ethos

The ethos that unifies our design process across our practice is based upon principles and potentials in Structure, Craft, Art and Nature.

  • Structure as the primordial expression of the material and its potential become one of the core principals of our practise.
  • Craft is the expression of the artist in his medium. It also defines the semantics associated with the place.
  • Art as a medium which invokes the user to dialogue with the space and thereby makes it a part of ones being.
  • Nature , the epitome of learning, with its billions of years of evolution always inspires us to look beyond the context of material and function and also helps us understand the various nuances it expresses itself in.

The four key principles of Structure, Craft, Art and Nature are interrelated. By considering each in relation to the others, we find we are able to both evolve robust design solutions and challenge them by raising the possibility of other approaches relevant to the contemporary world.

Research & Collaboration

Research and going beyond ones knowledge is also a critical aspect of our practise. We explore newer languages of expression in our medium, material and special quality. This is possible with our constant working with young minds and new thoughts. Regular workshops and dialogues within the office and also among various other artists help us to readdress our spatial qualities.

Design Process

Our design process is quite varied with involvement of various influencers from the field of art, craft, consultants and of course the data mine, the internet.

The process is quite open ended , but does delve consciously on the above mentioned ethos of our practise , the context, the dreams of the user and the value of the material. The office uses different mediums of expression of the design process, both delving into the manual and the machine to express the designs.

This allows us to think out of the box and come out with some very unique expressions of the built environment.

X

Internships

The firm strongly believes in the power of the young mind and has had the average age of the firm in its 20s. Internship is strongly valued as a medium of learning and also expressing ones thoughts through the various mediums.
